Patriots have lounge with PlayStation, pool, ping pong and more at training camp

It’s a new era in Foxborough.

The New England Patriots are holding their first training camp since 2000 without Bill Belichick and new head coach Jerod Mayo has made a number of changes to the lineup.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported that one notable change is a players’ lounge that will feature “pool tables, a PlayStation and a ping-pong table, among other amenities.”

“I think it’s important to create those spaces,” Mayo told Reiss. “One thing I’ve noticed over the last, let’s say five years, is that a lot of times when guys have recess, they just go to their locker and they pick up their phone; they’re scrolling through social media and there’s really no interaction. That’s also a time where they build camaraderie.”

The Patriots had a culture that was enviable throughout the league for much of the 21st century. Belichick’s 24-year tenure as head coach saw the Patriots reach 13 AFC Championships and nine Super Bowls, winning six. The Patriots also qualified for the postseason 20 times, with most of those appearances coming with Tom Brady at quarterback.

The tide turned somewhat after Brady left following the 2019 season, as the Patriots missed the playoffs in three of the next four seasons. The bottom fell in 2023, when the team went 4-13 and parted ways with Belichick after the season.

New England is hoping Mayo, who played eight seasons under Belichick with the Patriots, can lead the team into a new era of success. While he will likely attempt to adopt some of the culture of the previous regime, early signs like the players’ lounge show that “The Patriot Way” has new meaning.
