Motor vehicles and overnight camping are prohibited in Lake Mead’s Government Wash.

LAKE MEAD (KTNV) — Motor vehicles and overnight camping are no longer allowed in the Government Wash portion of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

On Friday, the National Park Service announced that the area will be closed starting August 1, 2024.

“In the past five years, there have been 1,365 incidents in that area that required police or fire department response,” said Chief Ranger Trouper Snow. “We have seen unacceptable levels of resource damage and crime, which is a drain on our park staff as it takes resources away from traditionally used areas. The numerous illegal roads and long-term encampments have created an unwelcoming environment for those who recreate in the Government Wash area.”

Park officials say they are focusing on vehicle access and overnight campsites, as these are the biggest sources of damage to the park and cause violations.

The park rangers added that as water levels dropped, “more ‘residential’ type visitors arrived and the area did not have adequate infrastructure, facilities or services to support their use.”

Government Wash Road and 8.0 Mile Road (access roads to Government Wash from North Shore Road) are blocked and motor vehicles are no longer allowed into the area.

Walking, cycling and access to the shoreline by boat for recreation are still possible within 30 metres of the shoreline.

The rangers plan to assess the damage in the area and also inspect illegal and unapproved roads.

Community meetings are planned for the fall and rangers are accepting feedback and ideas from the community about the Government Wash area. You can email them here.
