Motherwell vs Partick Thistle: Scottish League Cup – BBC Sport

Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell admitted he felt “pure anger” at his team’s performance in the draw against Partick Thistle, despite a point having been enough to progress to the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup.

Young goalkeeper Mason McCready shone for Thistle in both regulation time and the penalty shootout, where the visitors from the Championship took the bonus point, but it was not enough to deny Well the top spot in Group G.

Both teams missed good chances, with McCready making two good saves in the first half to deny Zach Robinson and Dan Casey the counter-attack.

The second half was largely dominated by the visitors, with Daniel MacKay and Brian Graham missing chances to put Kris Doolan’s side ahead.

There was a moment of controversy when Thistle were not allowed to field young striker Ricco Diack as a substitute and instead fielded Logan Chalmers because he was not included in a new online system.

After 90 minutes the score was 0-0 and a pointless penalty shootout was decided, sealing the fate of both teams.

Motherwell missed three of their four penalties, while Thistle’s Aaron Muirhead and Ben Stanway also saw their efforts saved by Aston Oxborough.

However, successful penalties from Kyle Turner, Brian Graham and Luke McBeth ultimately gave Thistle a rather useless point.

“Anyone at Motherwell Football Club who thinks that kind of performance is acceptable and that you can earn points from it in such a tough competition will be in for a rude awakening,” Kettlewell told BBC Scotland before his side were drawn at home to Premier League rivals Kilmarnock in the next round.

“Existing players and new players will learn that this is not accepted here. It is absolutely not accepted by me.”
