Summary of the second day of women’s singles

Rising star Mirra Andreeva also suffered a defeat on the second day, losing 6-3, 6-4 to Magda Linette, just days after winning her first title on the WTA Tour.

Gauff in a hurry as US wins first round

Second-seeded Coco Gauff had no problems in her opening match, as the American easily defeated Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, winning 6-3, 6-0.

With that, Gauff became the youngest female player from the United States to win a singles match at the Olympic Games since Venus Williams 24 years ago in Sydney. Williams went on to win gold.

It was a strong day for the American women. Emma Navarro, Jessica Pegula and Danielle also won in straight sets, bringing the score to four out of four for the American quartet.

Eleventh-seeded Navarro defeated Austrian Julia Grabher by just two games, fifth-seeded Pegula defeated Viktorija Golubic 6-3, 6-4, while eighth-seeded Collins led 6-3, 2-0 when Lara Siegemund retired from their first-round match.

Other results saw seeds Barbora Krejcikova, Beatriz Haddad Maia and Leylah Fernandez all be forced to the third set, with Krejcikova beating Sara Sorribes Tormo 4-6, 6-0, 7-6(2), Haddad Maia defeating Varvara Gracheva 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 and Fernandez winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

However, some of the women’s matches on the second day were a bit more one-sided.

Qinwen Zheng and Maria Lourdes Carle defeated Sara Errani and Tatjana Maria respectively with a double-bagel, while Maria Sakkari almost did the same by beating Danka Kovinic 6-0, 6-1 on Sunday.
