Sea Dogs conclude road trip with fourth straight win

BASKETBALL

Phillip Sikes was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and two runs scored. The Portland Sea Dogs extended their winning streak to four games with a 4-2 victory over the Somerset Patriots in an Eastern League game Sunday in Bridgewater, New Jersey.

Sea Dogs pitchers David Sandlin, Jacob Webb, Christopher Troye and Brendan Cellucci combined on a five-hitter. Webb (7-3) was awarded the win after allowing one hit in three scoreless innings, striking out four. Cellucci struck out the final two batters for his third save.

Portland took the lead in the second inning when Sikes doubled and scored on a single by Tyler McDonough.

Tyler Hardman hit a home run for Somerset in the second inning, but Portland answered in the third without a hit. Kristian Campbell took a leadoff walk, hit a baulk, then stole third and scored on a wild pitch.

Tyler Miller hit an RBI single in the fourth inning after a double by McDonough, and Sikes hit his seventh home run of the season in the fifth inning.

CAR RACING

FORMULA ONE: Lewis Hamilton has been promoted to first place at the Belgian Grand Prix after race control disqualified his Mercedes teammate George Russell for driving a car that was too light.

Russell crossed the finish line first after just one pit stop, finishing just ahead of Hamilton and celebrating what would have been his third career victory. However, race officials discovered his car weighed under the specified limits.

Instead, Hamilton extended his all-time record to 105 victories. The seven-time world champion has won two of the last three races since his triumph at the British Grand Prix earlier this month ended a drought of almost 1,000 days without a win.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri moved up to second, while polesitter Charles Leclerc of Ferrari completed the podium.

Max Verstappen, the leader in the standings, was in fourth place after starting from eleventh. He and his Red Bull team had exceeded the maximum number of engines for the season, resulting in a ten-place grid penalty.

GOLF

Seniors British Open: The evening’s leader, KJ Choi, won by two strokes over Australia’s Richard Green after posting a 2-under 70 at Carnoustie, Scotland.

The South Korean golfer won his first senior major, finishing at 10-under 278.

Green (71), who was also chasing his first senior major victory, had to settle for his third top-three finish in a major this year.

England’s Paul Broadhurst (70), the 2016 champion, was another two strokes behind in third place.

PGA: Jhonattan Vegas won for the first time in nearly seven years with a 3-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole for a 1-under 70 and a one-stroke victory over Max Greyserman at the 3M Open in Blaine, Minnesota.

Vegas finished at 17-under 267 at the windy TPC Twin Cities. It was his fourth PGA Tour victory, but the first for the 39-year-old from Venezuela since winning his second straight Canadian Open in 2017.

Greyserman, a 29-year-old rookie on the PGA Tour, shot 8-under 63, including a 30 on the back nine.

Maverick McNealy (70) and Matt Kuchar (71) finished tied for third place, two strokes behind.

LIV: Jon Rahm won LIV Golf UK in Rocester, England, for his first victory on the Saudi-funded tour when Tyrrell Hatton three-putted his final hole for a bogey.

Rahm closed with a 4-under 68 to finish at 13-under.

Season leader Joaquin-Niemann (65) and reigning champion Cameron-Smith (69) finished equal with Hatton (69) in second place.
