2024 Olympics LIVE: Team GB eye relay swimming glory after Simone Biles takes fifth gold

Simone Biles makes history as first woman to land Yurchenko’s double-pike at the Olympics

The fourth day of the 2024 Paris Olympics is once again packed with medals in gymnastics, fencing, judo, rugby, shooting, surfing, swimming and table tennis.

American superstar Simone Biles led her team to Olympic gold in the women’s gymnastics final, while British gymnasts Becky Downie, Alice Kinsella, Georgia-Mae Fenton, Ruby Evans and Abi Martin just missed out on the podium.

Nathan Hales won Team GB’s third gold medal at the Olympics with a stunning performance in the men’s trap shooting. In a thrilling battle for gold, Hales defeated China’s Qi Ying to set a new Olympic record in the event by missing just two of 50 shots in the final.

The British men have yet to get into the pool and will be trying to claim gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay, a race they won in Tokyo. Duncan Scott, Matt Richards, James Guy and Tom Dean are set to defend their title.

Earlier, the men’s triathlon was postponed at the last minute due to polluted water in the Seine River. Tests showed that the water quality was still “above acceptable limits”, meaning Tuesday’s race could not take place on time, creating uncertainty among the athletes.

2024 Olympic Games: Swimming – Men’s 800m Freestyle

Speaking to BBC TV after winning gold for Team Ireland in the men’s 800m freestyle, Daniel Wiffen said: “I wrote, ‘I’m going to go down in history.’ And that’s exactly what I did.

“It was absolutely (a perfect race) in the way I wanted to execute it. It wasn’t the time I wanted, but you know, Olympic finals aren’t about getting the time, it’s about being the first to get your hand on the wall.

“I haven’t seen Andy (his coach), he’s somewhere in the building. I have no idea, but I’m sure I’ll see him on that highest podium later.

“I heard Nathan (his twin brother) when I walked out and I was like, ‘I can’t believe you’re yelling that.’ He was the only person I could hear in the crowd, which is kind of ironic, my twin brother is all I can hear.”

2024 Olympic Games: Swimming – Women’s 100m Freestyle Semi-Finals

Oh wow. This race is fast. Tori Huske from the US flies away from the start and seems to be ahead of the rest. She has already hit the wall on the turn and has some work to do on the way back.

Huske takes fourth place, while Australia’s Mollie O’Callaghan wins with a time of 52.75.

Anna Hopkin will not be in the final.

2024 Olympic Games: Swimming – Women’s 100m Freestyle Semi-Finals

Anna Hopkin is third at the turn in her semi-final but she slows down in the last 50m and finishes sixth in the race. It will be a tough task for her to get through now.

Siobhan Bernadette Haughey set the pace with a fine 52.64 seconds, with Hopkin one second behind in 53.74 seconds. She will need to swim slower in the second semi-final to get through.

2024 Olympics: Biles wins Olympic gold with a little help as US dominates team final

The all-around team final is a wild circus of a night with somersaults, spins and falls in every direction, and you need four eyes to watch. But at 8:20 p.m. there was only one routine left to perform, and the room belonged to Simone Biles.

She performed with resilience and extraordinary height, culminating in a triple twisting double back somersault that is difficult enough to write, let alone perform in an Olympic final. The routine had some flaws in the landing, but it is a measure of her otherworldly skill that her score of 14.666 was still by far the best of the evening. She sealed the gold with a kiss, and the Bercy Arena erupted.

2024 Olympic Games: Swimming – Men’s 800m Freestyle – Wiffin Wins Gold for Ireland!

Gosh, what a swim, he found something within 20m of the wall, Wiffin pulls himself up, he’s done it. He gestures, puts down the phone and sinks into the water.

Wiffin makes history for Northern Ireland, winning his first gold in 36 years and also setting an Olympic record by crossing the finish line in a time of 7:38.19!

Bobby Finke won silver for the US and Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy took bronze.

2024 Olympic Games: Swimming – Men’s 800m Freestyle

Daniel Wiffen wants to make history for Ireland. Can he break the 36-year wait for a Northern Irish athlete to win an Olympic gold medal?

The 23-year-old has started well and has beaten American Winnington halfway through the race.

But Finke is there too, as is Paltrinieri, who has also pushed on. This could be a razor-precise finish. That trio is now coming loose.

It’s Wiffin, Finke and Paltrinieri, all within a few tenths of a second as we approach the final 100m. The noise is increasing, the distance is causing the tension to rise and we’re down to two lengths.

The Italian leads by 0.78 points, against Wiffin… Can the Northern Irishman still make up for this?

They’re so close together, most of them standing, 50 meters to go, three men, barely separated, 20 meters to go. It’s going to be Wiffin!

2024 Olympic Games: Swimming – Women’s 200m Backstroke

That was sensational, Kaylee McKeown did it, in 57.33, a new Olympic record!

The Aussie goes back-to-back, beating the American duo of Smith and Berkoff, for silver and bronze. And don’t the Aussies love it, with Lleyton Hewitt and Alex De Minaur in the crowd.

With smooth, tight strokes it was a neck-and-neck race until her turn. Then she took off at full speed. Now it was time for the men’s 800m freestyle.

2024 Olympic Games: Swimming – Men’s 200m Butterfly

An icon! Leon Marchand swims stunningly again, winning the first semi-final, 1min 53.40secs, beating Canadian Ilya Kharun and Estonian Kregor Zirk – who sets a national record.

But what a noise, the hosts are glued to Marchand and every time he enters the pool the pressure is enormous.

Marchand runs to the pool to cool off. He needs to flush the lactic acid out of his system for that tough double stroke. He’ll be back later in the day for the men’s 200m breaststroke, which starts at 20:59 (BST).
