Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Carol Burnett is joining the “Palm Royale” episode “Maxine Shakes the Tree” as her submission for the 2024 Emmy Award for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. “Maxine Shakes the Tree” aired April 3 and is the fifth episode of the Apple TV+ series’ first season.

In this episode, Norma (Burnett) has woken up from her coma, unable to speak. Her conversations involve a lot of mumbling and groaning. Maxine interprets one of Norma’s mumbles as a sign that she should confront Douglas (Josh Lucas) about his previous engagement to Linda (Laura Dern), so she takes Norma with her in a wheelchair. A flashback reveals that Norma was the one who helped Douglas run away to Chattanooga from Maxine, leaving Linda at the altar. At the end, Linda tells Norma it’s over and throws the contents of her Rolodex into the fire, while Norma can only groan.
